Recreation

Expereince Le Meriedien's Unlock Art program. Palau Güell invites you to engage with the destination through the discovery of one of renowned architect and genius Antonio Gaudí’s early master pieces. The room keys at Le Méridien Barcelona give complimentary access to this magnificent monument.
Located 5 minutes by foot from the hotel, this palace is a magnificent example of domestic architecture in the context of Art Nouveau and one of the first important commissions Antoni Gaudí received at the start of his career and which influenced his later works such as the Sagrada Familia, Parque Güell or the Casa Batlló. Eusebi Güell (industrialist, politician and patron of the arts) wanted Gaudí to build him this peculiar urban palace as an extension of the family home on La Rambla, the Palau Güell. Gaudí designed a functional palace adapted to the family's needs in both their private life and the intense cultural and social life they led.
The building is noteworthy for its innovative conception of space and light. In building Palau Güell Gaudí used a variety of solutions based on very personal approaches and created exceptional expressive forms, the fruit of his imagination, using noble traditional materials (stone, wood, wrought iron, pottery, glass, etc.).
It was declared a historical-artistic monument by the Spanish Government (in 1969), Cultural Asset of National Interest by the Catalan Government and a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (in 1984). As an early work, the building contains the essence of Gaudí's later works and is fundamental to understanding his architecture.

Nearby Attractions

Having Gaudí as a cicerone is an excellent way of getting to know the capital of Catalonia: Casa Batlló, Casa Mila, Güell Park... and, of course, the Sagrada Familia. The Gothic Quarter preserves a number of interesting elements, such as Obispo Bridge, which leads to Rey Square. Here, apart from the famous cathedral, one must visit the Picasso Museum. The trendy neighborhood is now the Born, with the most original shopping available. And a walk through the Ramblas, that cross the heart of the city and lead to the sea between flower stalls and human statues.
