Experience the North Island’s extraordinary range of scenery in one journey as the Northern Explorer takes you through rolling green farmland and virgin bush, past quaint country towns and along rocky coasts. Along the way, you will see the Raurimu Spiral and many other iconic engineering solutions required to complete the trunk line that stretches the length of New Zealand's rugged North Island terrain.
The journey through Tongariro National Park, with its three spectacular volcanic mountains – Tongariro, Ngāuruhoe and Ruapehu – is a highlight, a place of extremes and surprises, where snow-blanketed fields, ancient lava flows and dense beech forests can be seen side by side.

Itinerary

National Park whether you're heading to National Park for a summer or winter holiday, you'll find a host of adventure and outdoor activities to suit all ages and abilities. The village is in the heart of a natural wonderland, bordered by the World Heritage Tongariro National Park and its three active volcanoes to the east, and the Whanganui National Park and Whanganui River to the west. In the warmer months you can tramp, bike, raft or fish.

Wellington has to have plenty going for it to be rated the Coolest Little Capital in the World and Wellington has what it takes in spades. Creative, coffee loving, spoilt for dining choices, thoroughly entertaining and accessible, Wellington is an easy city to explore and sample its many attractions by foot or public transport.

The carriages on the Northern Explorer are comfortable and spacious with reclining seats, air-conditioning and large panoramic windows.

Food and Dining

Each train has a fully licensed on-board café offering a range of snacks, beverages, hot and cold meals. Choose from a fresh muffin and hot coffee, or a cheese board accompanied by a glass of your favorite New Zealand beer or wine. Meals include sandwiches, soups, salads and a variety of hot mains - something to satisfy every taste bud.

Cabins

The cabins feature spacious seating, some in groups of 4. Panoramic windows. Open-air viewing carriage. Fully licensed café car.
